Dr. Seuss Weeks Coming to an End…

For the past two weeks, our classroom has celebrated the life and writings of Dr. Seuss. Every day we have read a different Dr. Seuss story and have worked together to do some great activities. We have reenacted Yertle The Turtle, we have eaten green eggs, made Bartholomew’s Oobleck and even created our own Cat and the Hat hats!

One of our favorite parts of the past two weeks has been welcoming guest readers into our classrooms. Thank you to all of the parents who have graciously donated their time to make our Dr. Seuss weeks more special. It is truly a time that your kindergartener will never forget!

First Field Trip to The Apollo Theater

Last Thursday, our class went to see “The True Story of the Three Little Pigs” at the Apollo Theater. The trip went wonderfully and it would not have been such a great success if it were not for the help of our supportive parents. Thank you to those who came with us, I really appreciate it! 100 Day is a Huge Success!

If you haven’t already heard, our 100th day of school was amazing! The day started out with Zero the Hero himself coming into the classroom to say hello. The children were very excited to meet this mystery hero and believe that he looks very similar to Mr. Chantry, the gym teacher. We decided that they must be cousins! That day we also drew pictures of what we would look like if we were 100 years old, talked about what we would do with $100, shared our 100 day projects and even ate 100 pancakes! Field Trip to the Apollo Theater

On Thursday, February 25th we will be going on our first field trip to the Apollo Theater! We will be leaving shortly after the children arrive on Thursday to see the theater’s morning performance of, “The True Story of the Three Little Pigs.” This will be a wonderful time for us to share in the excitement of riding the bus together and being somewhere besides room 203 To ensure that your child is able to attend the field trip, please sign the parent consent form and send in $12 with your child as soon as possible. On Tuesday, February 23rd, we will be celebrating our 100th day of school! This is a very exciting time for the children because we have been anticipating this day for a long time. This year, we will be doing many activities in celebration of this day. Two activities that you, as parents need to be aware of is the 100′s day project and the 100′s day hash. Please work with your child at home to bring in a project to share that is 100 of something. This can be as simple as a necklace with 100 beads or it can be something that your child has a collection of. This can be as simple or as complex as you would like it to be. Please make sure that your child checks and re checks that they bring in 100 of the object by counting by 1′s, 2′s, 5′s and of course 10′s. We will also be making a “100′s Day Hash.” Each child will bring in 100 of any particular food (excluding peanut products). We will mix these foods together to create a 100′s day snack to enjoy. Remember, this day is quickly approaching so do not delay! Thank you!

Sliding Through Penguin Week

This week we had an amazing time learning about penguins. We started the week off by talking about what we already knew about penguins (which happend to be a whole lot)! Then, we worked on our fine motor skills by cutting out a penguin of our own. Through out the week we did some really fun penguin activities too! We practiced holding eggs on our feet like a penguin would, we did an interesting science experiment with blubber and we ended the week watching the phenomenal movie, “March of the Penguins.” While engrossing ourselves with the non fiction information about penguins, the children learned that penguins survive in the Antarctic because of their amazing swimming skills, their layer of blubber to keep them warm, and their keen sense of direction. Who knew that the penguins could keep their chicks warm by keeping them in their brood pouch? If you are confused by this, start your children this week and ask them what a brood pouch is
